$125 per student for Spring or Fall Session

Acting

Students will be introduced to various acting concepts to give them a foundation of understanding what acting is all about. Liberating and exhilarating exercises help the student with understanding theater discipline and how to handle distractions. Students will learn relaxation techniques; audition techniques – winning that special role - and exercises which will help them free up the mind and body in order to reach their full potential. Vocal Training

Instructors Jo Nash and Valerie Nelson will teach students how to use their voices properly to protect the young voice and will teach them how to read music. Instructors: Jo Nash & Valerie Nelson

Movement

Learn the proper way to stretch, strengthen and build coordination. Simple steps and combinations will be given. Character steps that would likely be given during an audition will be taught and perfected through weeks of repetition. Instructor: Jo Nash

Puppetry Workshops

Learning the in’s and out’s of puppeteering from Michael & Valerie Nelson, owners of the Magical Moonshine Puppet Company. Students will be taught how to take on the identity of a puppet and make it believable. Instructors: Michael & Valerie Nelson

December 2008 Young Audiences Production

All students from both sessions will be cast in Roald Dahl’s “Willy Wonka” production which auditions in October and will be presented over three weekends in December, 2008

Magical Moonshine Puppet Co.

Michael Nelson has performed and taught for almost thirty years. He has trained with Muppet creator Jim Henson and has taught puppetry, storytelling and mask making to children and adults. He is an Artist in Residence through the California Arts Council and has taught puppetry, toy theatre and storytelling (among other subjects) at Blue Oak Summer School in Napa. He has also taught puppetry and drama skills to professionals, teachers, college, middle school and elementary aged students.

Valerie Nelson is a founding partner with Michael of Magical Moonshine Theatre. She has taught in Montessori schools, specializing in Spanish and music. She has taught summer classes at Blue Oak School in Napa (Kindergarten, Puppetry, Kitchen science).

Instructors

Jo Nash, originally from Southern California, has directed and choreographed musicals, taught all forms of dance, voice and gymnastics in both Northern and Southern California for 32 years. During this time she also toured with dance and theater troupes worldwide. She is excited to bring her knowledge and expertise to Vallejo Music Theater.

Sheila Atwater, Class Assistant, is a graduate of Solano College Theater’s Actor Training Program. She was Director and Playwright for VMT’s first Young Audiences Program “A Yuletide Fairytale.” A member of VMT since 1999 she has performed in several productions and will be assisting instructors in the Conservatory for the second year.

Kris MacKain, Ph.D., volunteers in fund-raising and coordinating after-school art programs that link Vallejo’s art community with Vallejo’s elementary school students. Her mission is to find opportunities for education in the arts and sciences for talented, economically disadvantaged students. She is a speech pathologist for the Vallejo City Unified School District.
